The first invitation Sunny ever created was for a birthday party. While teaching preschool, Sunny was hired by one of her student’s mothers to create party invites. After graduating from the Northwest College of Art located in Washington, Sunny dabbled in freelance graphic design, as that is where her true passion lies. Needless to say, when this invitation opportunity arose Sunny jumped at the chance to design. Shortly after, her custom stationery, handmade note and wedding invitation company, Puddle Jumpin’ Cards was born.
Sunny naturally fell into designing wedding invitations. With the success she experienced from designing her sister’s wedding invites, Sunny has been able to work off of great recommendations, in turn helping to further develop her business.
Even though Sunny designs cards and stationery for various occasions, she loves creating wedding invitations. Each bride brings a unique aspiration to the table, which keeps things interesting and inspires new ideas. Fashion, textiles, playful typefaces and arrangements also contribute to her inspiration. She goes on to quote Frank Lloyd Wright, ‘Look to nature, it will never fail you.’ When asked about her creative style, she was quick to point out how she enjoys the process of adapting to her clients tastes. Sunny continues by describing her style as whimsical and classic, and she enjoys using bold colors and fun type- faces.
Puddle Jumpin’ Cards is unique in the fact that Sunny specializes in block printed stationery, which is the printing of hand engraved or carved blocks. Block printing is a lot more challenging than choosing a font and is a medium that is becoming harder to come by as the digital world expands.
While Sunny enjoys the process of designing, what she looks forward to most is seeing all of the different elements come together to complete the inspired product. If you are looking for a talented graphic designer who brings a unique skill-set to the table you should contact Sunny Rickards for a consultation.
